These events are open to Chamber members and prospective members.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Body Image in the Workplace, presented by Kristyn Y. Soto, MS (Director of Community Partnerships) and Kate Jarvi, LPC (Rock Recovery Therapist) at Rock Recovery.

Everyday we have to navigate hundreds of messages that are directly related to how our bodies should look so that we can feel our best. We place these "shoulds" around what we eat, how we dress, what we look like, and how we perform at work and at home. But more often than not, we are unable to meet the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves and our bodies, and we're left feeling defeated and deflated.

In this month's master class, Rock Recovery will be joining us to discuss what it means to be a professional woman living in a diet-minded world. Together, we'll break down stereotypes and stigmas around mental health and self image in the office, and you will walk away with tips and tools to help you begin to build a healthy self image - in and out of the office.

Learning objectives:

- Understand the history and influences of diet culture on how we view our bodies

- Break down cultural myths on health and wellness

- Gain a basic understanding of Health At Every Size (HAES) principles

- Develop tools to help you work towards body acceptance in your professional life

Speakers

Kate Jarvi, LPC (Rock Recovery Therapist)

Kate is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) specializing in both individual and group therapy with adults and teens with eating disorders. Kate is trained in providing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT), intuitive eating principles and body acceptance skills — which she implements regularly in her practice.

Kristyn Y. Soto, MS (Director of Community Partnerships):

Kristyn became Rock Recovery’s second full-time staff hire in October of 2017. Kristyn has an educational background in Psychology, and she has always been passionate about increasing access to mental health services. She holds a BA in Psychology and an MS in Applied Developmental Psychology, and often presents alongside her colleagues to increase awareness and educate community members on caring for their mental health and well-being. Since joining the team, Kristyn has worked closely alongside the Executive Director to help Rock grow from a one-program organization to a community cornerstone across Greater DC.

We are currently accepting topic submissions for our 2022 series!

There are many reasons to become a speaker, including exposure for you and your business. You will be showcasing yourself and your business as a thought leader/content expert. You and your business will be featured on the Chamber’s website, weekly newsletter, and the Arlingtonian newsletter (where space and timing allow).

If you are interested in becoming a speaker, please submit a proposed topic with a one paragraph summary description to events@arlingtonchamber.org.

This event provides expert speakers on topics to help you grow your business, such as digital marketing and business development and also gives you the opportunity to make connections and grow your professional network. The forum is applicable to a variety of businesses and employee levels, from front-line customer service to owners.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Employee Retention Credit: Easy Tax Credits You May Have Missed Out On, presented by Peter Haukebo, Esq. and Rebecca Sheppard, Esq., Tax Directors at Frost Law.

Many businesses took advantage of Covid relief programs such as PPP and EIDL, but they’re missing out on relief from the Employee Retention Credit (ERC).

For the last two years our Tax Directors Rebecca Sheppard, Esq., and Peter Haukebo, Esq., have helped hundreds of businesses understand the qualifications for ERC and other relief programs. Many payroll processors wrongly determine businesses as ineligible for ERC, which is not the case. With tax attorneys and CPAs, our team can help you understand the eligibility requirements for all types of industries (restaurants, construction, theaters, event venues, hotels, non-profits, medical and dental practices, etc).

Don’t miss out on your opportunity to ask our team your questions about eligibility and how to make sure you are not leaving money on the table.

Join our legal team for this presentation to learn how your business can qualify for ERC and claim up to $26,000 per employee.

- COVID relief that is fully funded

- 7 potential quarters of eligibility

- 2 independent eligibility tests

- Up to $26,000 per employee

- Cash refund — not a loan or a grant"

Sponsorship Opportunities

Arlington’s revolutionary new Talent Pilot Program will launch on August 25th when four Arlington residents begin their hands-on job training as software engineers in Exelaration’s top-ranked program. Meet the participants, the clients, the trainers, and join the community in celebrating this innovative workforce partnership. We’ll have a lively happy hour at Venture X’s bright beautiful space, and hear remarks from community and corporate leaders, running from 5-8pm.

About the program: "Our Arlington tech community is particularly close-knit and progressive, yet the tech talent deficit persists. The Arlington Talent Pilot Program addresses this challenge by connecting local residents with paid, full-time temporary work via mentored training with Exelaration. This program breaks the “no experience, no job” cycle by using Exelaration’s proven experiential learning model. This is a community effort: while we’re the experts in engineering and mentoring, we’re partnering with select organizations to help give participants the most well-rounded program possible. Through events, networking, projects, donations, lectures, and more, you can help make our community even greater."

There has been a wave of people and businesses across the country hiring consultants and creating task forces to tackle the issue of equity and diversity in the workplace. As the organizations most often working with those affected by inequity, it is important for nonprofits to also be looking at this issue and ensuring that we are incorporating a DEIB focus into all aspects of nonprofit management, from service areas to board members, messaging to fundraising.

Join the Arlington Chamber of Commerce’s Community Action Committee for our Nonprofit Forum which will discuss how belonging is the lens through which we should view our diversity, equity, and inclusion work. The panel – which features local experts and members of the nonprofit community currently undergoing a shift in their own organizations – will address issues such as:

- Shifting your organizational mindset

- How to establish conditions for accepting donations

- How to respectfully diversify your board

- Communicating change to your supporters

Agenda
