The Chamber's Women in Business Master Class series offers an important educational opportunity to female business owners and professionals. These events are open to Chamber members and prospective members.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Body Image in the Workplace, presented by Kristyn Y. Soto, MS (Director of Community Partnerships) and Kate Jarvi, LPC (Rock Recovery Therapist) at Rock Recovery.

Everyday we have to navigate hundreds of messages that are directly related to how our bodies should look so that we can feel our best. We place these "shoulds" around what we eat, how we dress, what we look like, and how we perform at work and at home. But more often than not, we are unable to meet the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves and our bodies, and we're left feeling defeated and deflated.

In this month's master class, Rock Recovery will be joining us to discuss what it means to be a professional woman living in a diet-minded world. Together, we'll break down stereotypes and stigmas around mental health and self image in the office, and you will walk away with tips and tools to help you begin to build a healthy self image - in and out of the office.

Learning objectives:

- Understand the history and influences of diet culture on how we view our bodies

- Break down cultural myths on health and wellness

- Gain a basic understanding of Health At Every Size (HAES) principles

- Develop tools to help you work towards body acceptance in your professional life

Speakers

Kate Jarvi, LPC (Rock Recovery Therapist)

Kate is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) specializing in both individual and group therapy with adults and teens with eating disorders. Kate is trained in providing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT), intuitive eating principles and body acceptance skills — which she implements regularly in her practice.

Kristyn Y. Soto, MS (Director of Community Partnerships):

Kristyn became Rock Recovery’s second full-time staff hire in October of 2017. Kristyn has an educational background in Psychology, and she has always been passionate about increasing access to mental health services. She holds a BA in Psychology and an MS in Applied Developmental Psychology, and often presents alongside her colleagues to increase awareness and educate community members on caring for their mental health and well-being. Since joining the team, Kristyn has worked closely alongside the Executive Director to help Rock grow from a one-program organization to a community cornerstone across Greater DC.

The Sizzling Summer Century ride is designed to get you and your team active and raise money for a great cause! Raise + Ride includes a fully supported in-person ride on Saturday, August 6 on the W&OD Trail from our shop in Arlington to Purcellville and back, with riders starting to roll out at 7am. Documentary Photographer Jana Rajcova will present her Exodus.Report project. Ms. Rajcova is based in Bratislava, Slovakia, and her Exodus.Report photographs and tells the stories of Ukrainian refugees who have found safety in Slovakia since Russia's full-scale invasion began.

Healthy Kids Running Series is a national nonprofit entering our 8th season in Arlington! HKRS is a cross-country style series of races for kids ages 2-14 - with an emphasis on making fitness fun for the entire family. There has been a wave of people and businesses across the country hiring consultants and creating task forces to tackle the issue of equity and diversity in the workplace. As the organizations most often working with those affected by inequity, it is important for nonprofits to also be looking at this issue and ensuring that we are incorporating a DEIB focus into all aspects of nonprofit management, from service areas to board members, messaging to fundraising.

Join the Arlington Chamber of Commerce’s Community Action Committee for our Nonprofit Forum which will discuss how belonging is the lens through which we should view our diversity, equity, and inclusion work. $1 parking is available in the Ballston Quarter Garage (627 N Glebe Rd.) for up to 3 hours. The location is also directly adjacent to the Ballston Metro, which serves the orange and silver lines.
