Studies show that resilient and flexible people do not only handle stressful situations, they can actually thrive from them.

In this presentation, Julie will speak from her experience as an immigrant and becoming a successful entrepreneur. She spent more than 20 years influencing measurable organizational growth and designing and facilitating effective leadership development programs during her time at the US Department of Commerce and Boeing. In addition to owning Venture X, she is also an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill MBA program, a senior advisor at McChrystal Group, and serves on the Board of Northern Virginia Community College.

To be eligible you must be a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses. This includes any profession in which you are 100% personally responsible for any failure or success, and you have to run the business itself and acquire your own customers.

The American Rescue Plan Act that Congress passed in March included an approximately $23 million allocation directly for Arlington County. These funds are in addition to money given to the Commonwealth of Virginia. In April, the County Board directed that some of those funds (estimated to be about $2 million) be used to support small businesses through grants similar to the local Small Business Emergency Relief GRANT program implemented last year. Arlington Economic Development is working on the proposal for criteria and process to apply for these grants. On Wednesday, August 4 from 9:00-10:00 a.m., AED Deputy Director Cindy Richmond and BizLaunch Director Tara Palacios will join the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee to discuss their current planning and to hear feedback and ideas from committee members.

Parking
The Chamber office is located 0.2 mile from the Courthouse Metro station (Orange & Silver lines). Two hour metered street parking is available in front of the Chamber office. There is also two hour metered parking in the ground lot at 14th Street & Courthouse Road, across from the Arlington Courthouse. An underground parking lot is available at 14th Street & Taft Street with rates of $4 (1 hour), $6 (2 hours), and $8 (until closing).

The Virginia House of Delegates is up for election this November. The Arlington Chamber has extended invitations to all candidates running for House of Delegates seats that include Arlington to speak with the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee and take questions from our members. On Wednesday, August 18 at 9:00 a.m., we will welcome:

Del. Patrick Hope (Democrat/Incumbent – 47^th District), 9:00-9:10 a.m.

Laura Hall (Republican – 47^th District), 9:10-9:20 a.m.

Del. Rip Sullivan (Democrat/Incumbent – 48^th District), 9:20-9:30 a.m.

Edward Monroe (Republican – 48^th District), 9:30-9:40 a.m.

Tim Kilcullen (Republican – 49^th District), 9:40-9:50 a.m.

Terry Modglin (Independent – 49^th District), 9:50-10:00 a.m.

J.D. Maddox (Republican – 45^th District), 10:00-10:10 a.m.

The Chamber also extended invitations to Del. Alfonso Lopez (Democrat/Incumbent – 49^th District) and Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (Democrat – 45^th District), but they are unable to attend on August 18.

Each candidate will have 10 minutes to give brief remarks (no more than 3 minutes) and to take questions from committee members. The candidates will join us one at a time, in sequence; there will be no direct back-and-forth or debate amongst the candidates. We encourage everyone to arrive promptly at 9:00 a.m. (or even a couple of minutes early) so that we can get started without delay. That said, due to the logistics of speakers entering and exiting, this meeting may run past the 10:10 a.m. scheduled end time.

Also, as with our in-person meetings in the VIDA Fitness Boardroom, participation in this online Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee meeting is strictly for members of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: OAR Presents - Banning the Box and Hiring BIPOC Talent presented by Elizabeth Jones Valderrama, Executive Director, OAR of Arlington, Alexandria, and Falls Church (OAR).

OAR is a community-based nonprofit which envisions a safe and thriving community where those impacted by the legal system enjoy equal civil and human rights. OAR's downstream work allows them to be on the journey with individuals of all genders returning to the community from incarceration and support their families in the homecoming process.

In this month’s Small Business Roundtable, learn why it is important for employers to "ban the box" and the additional benefits they get from hiring individuals that previously experienced incarceration. OAR will also be sharing resources on the importance of hiring BIPOC talent and other diverse populations.
