LeadShare provides introductions and warm referrals to member businesses and business leaders within the Arlington community. The group meets to build relationships, share best business practices, and discuss types of clients and opportunities members are targeting.

Provided as a free member benefit of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, any member is eligible to participate in LeadShare. However, participation in the group will ultimately be limited to one vertical industry per member. The Chamber maintains a waiting list for additional interest.

The Arlington County is conducting a review of Columbia Pike Form Based Code’s Ground Story Uses regulation, with an eye to loosening some of the restrictions in the current regulations. On June 2 at 9:00 a.m., representatives from Arlington’s Planning Division and Arlington Economic Development will join the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee to discuss the study, answer questions, and receive feedback.

Then, there will be primary elections on June 8 to nominate the Democratic candidates for two of the House of Delegates districts. Incumbent Delegate Alfonso Lopez is being challenged by Karishma Mehta in the 49th House District, and incumbent Delegate Mark Levine is being challenged by Alexandria Vice Mayor Elizabeth Bennett-Parker in the 45th House District. The four candidates will join us in sequence to discuss their campaigns.

HOw can Arlington solve the Missing Middle Housing puzzle? Keynote Speaker: Daniel Parolek, CEO and Principal of Opticos Design As the author of Missing Middle Housing: Thinking Big and Building Small to Respond to Today’s Housing Crisis, Daniel Parolek inspired a new movement for housing choice in 2010 when he introduced the concept of the “missing middle” in American housing. Today, Opticos creates innovative architectural designs to help build walkable communities with unique, diverse housing choices that are attainable for all. Parolek spoke at the?2016 AHS Leckey Forum?to help introduce the Missing Middle Housing concept to Arlington. Since then, he and his firm have been working with communities across the country to design and implement Missing Middle Housing strategies. In this webinar, Parolek will give a short summary of his book and introduce the top five mistakes cities and states are making when implementing Missing Middle Housing. His presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on the implications for Arlington. What lessons can the County learn from those mistakes to help solve our Missing Middle Housing puzzle? Competitive runners, fitness/frequent runners, joggers/recreational runners & walkers/strollers are welcome! Join Clarendon United Methodist Church as it hosts the annual Arlington Bunny Hop! The race's mission is to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy a fun, healthy, spring weather activity and to raise support for local Arlington charities. The race is an outreach mission of the Clarendon United Methodist Church. To date, the Hop has contributed $37,132.68 to the beneficiaries: Bridges to Independence and OAR (Offender Aid and Restoration). This year, the race will be held in person on June 12th for those that are comfortable meeting in person. All CDC guidelines will be followed at the race. Temporary Outdoor Seating Areas (or TOSAs) have been a lifeline for Arlington’s Restaurants during the pandemic. They have also added vibrancy to our streetscape and opened many Arlingtonians to the benefits of expanding outdoor dining on a permanent basis. Arlington County has promised that TOSAs will remain in operation through 2021, and are starting a review of how to add aspects of the TOSA program into Arlington’s permanent code.

On Wednesday, June 16 from 9:00-10:00 a.m., Jill Hunger of Arlington’s Department of Community Planning, Housing, and Development, and Kate Paine of Arlington Economic Development will join the Chamber’s Government Affairs and Economic Development Committee to discuss the outlook for TOSAs and to hear members’ ideas about how to make them a permanent part of Arlington’s streetscape.

This event provides expert speakers on topics to help you grow your business, such as digital marketing and business development, and also gives you the opportunity to make connections and grow your professional network. The forum is applicable to a variety of businesses and employee levels, from front-line customer service to owners.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Financial Planning Essentials for Business Owners presented by Mark Downs, Wealth Management Supervisor at Northwestern Mutual

How do business owners attract and retain the best and the brightest to keep growing? When should they start thinking about succession planning and what will it look like? How do business owners address risk such as the loss of a partner or key employee? How should they develop a desirable exit strategy? There’s much that keeps a business owner up at night. Building and growing a successful business is hard work, but this does not have to be done alone.

In this roundtable, Mark will address these questions and more for business owners. Business plans and processes are interdependent and it is key to integrate these elements in order to maintain a successful business.

As a small business owner, Mark understands the challenges they currently face. Due to his firsthand experience, it has made him passionate about helping other business owners plan for their company’s financial security.
