The Arlington Chamber has extended invitations to all candidates running for Governor or Lieutenant Governor to speak with the committee and take questions. On Wednesday, April 7 at 9:00 a.m., we will welcome the second group of five candidates who have accepted our invitation: Sen. Jennifer McClellan (Democrat for Governor), Glenn Youngkin (Republican for Governor), Del. Hala Ayala (Democrat for Lt. Governor), and Sean Perryman (Democrat for Lt. Governor).

Each candidate will have 15 minutes to give brief remarks (no more than 5 minutes) and to take questions from committee members. The candidates will join us one at a time, in sequence; there will be no direct back-and-forth or debate amongst the candidates. We encourage everyone to arrive promptly at 9:00 a.m. (or even a couple of minutes early) so that we can get started without delay. That said, due to the logistics of speakers entering and exiting, this meeting will likely run until 10:30 a.m.

What: Bridges is hosting a virtual extravaganza to celebrate 36 years of great work in the community and to keep the work going! Join us for a short program of Bridges, followed by a silent auction and your choice of a virtual activity. After registering, you will receive a link to choose which virtual activity you would like to join. Some of the options include playing trivia, enjoying live music with a DJ, learning to dance the Zouk, and more!

Why: With COVID-19, this past year has been one of the most challenging yet for our community. Last March, practically overnight, nearly 80% of our families found themselves unemployed or experiencing a significant reduction in hours. Thanks to community support, we were able to keep all of our families housed and continue safely offering supportive services to more than 100 families. However, the result is that we spent a year's worth of resources in six months and are now out of funds to cover much-needed rental subsidies. Now, more than ever, we need your help!

Price: Tickets are $150 per registrant or $200 for two registrants.

Recovery Program Solutions of Virginia encourages Arlington Chamber Volunteer Day participants to create Homeless Survival Kits. The kits include a variety of invaluable items the homeless adults we support can use nearly immediately. Items such as bottled water, hand sanitizer, masks, nonperishable food items, warm clothing (gloves, hats, hand warmers), no-wash shampoo and other hygiene items, magazines/adult coloring books, etc. Participants can make bags that are specifically for women (with needed products), for men (with needed products), or bags for universal use. We ask that the items be placed in cloth bags (or backpacks) that are easy to carry (because recipients must carry their possessions with them) and deliver them to our Arlington Center on Columbia Pike between 10 am – 4 pm on April 20 (or by appointment as needed). Our team members can meet you outside the facility for a touchless drop-off experience. Donors are also encouraged to include a personalized note for recipient’s signed with their first name. The notes are treasured by recipients because they help remind them that others sincerely care about them and what they are going through. This volunteer group will be preparing and staining/weather proofing the trellis covering to an outdoor patio area at Sibert House. This new patio and trellis was installed last Spring and the raw wood has now rested for a season and ready to be prepped and stained. The Arlington Chamber of Commerce is seeking individuals and teams of enthusiastic volunteers to participate in Arlington Chamber Volunteer Day, an annual tradition that engages businesses and individuals in rewarding half-day service projects throughout the community.

Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals and groups of all sizes. Arlington Chamber Volunteer Day produced by the Chamber's Community Action Committee and connects Arlington businesses to Chamber member nonprofits. This is a great opportunity for nonprofits to develop relationships with Arlington businesses.

We will be hosting a Virtual Kickoff before things get started with the volunteer sites. Joining us will be special guest, Arlington County Board Chair, Matt de Ferranti. They will then drop off the kits at AWLA.

Computer CORE is requesting that volunteers meet at the Assembly of God church in Arlington VA located at 4501 N. Pershing Street, Arlington, VA 22203 by 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday April 20th. This project is focused on helping Assembly of God church in Arlington VA prepare for in-class learning sometime in the future. Volunteers will help CORE staff sort and organize outdated computer equipment for refurbishment or recycling.

Once computers are removed, dusting and sanitizing will take place. If volunteers can bring paper towels, Endust, wipes/ cloths and 409 spray, that would be very helpful.

Volunteers will be asked to make recreational therapy beanbags for residents. Volunteers will be provided with a supply list and step by step instructions once they have registered for the opportunity. As this opportunity is virtual, volunteers are asked to acquire their own supplies for the project. Volunteers will also be invited to participate in a 15-30 minutes introductory Zoom call where they will learn more about Cri and the opportunity and will have the chance to ask any questions they may have.

Culpepper Garden

Volunteers will help with garden assignments throughout the day. Assignments include painting benches located throughout our garden. As well as cleaning up the wooded and pond area to remove invasive plants, branches and debris that can cause tripping hazards and relocating garden statues. We will provide all materials needed including the paint, brushes, gloves, and trash bags. We will make sure social distance guidelines are followed and masks are worn at all times.

Phoneix Bikes is planning a stream clean-up and trash tally of the Columbia Pike section of the Four Mile Run stream and path. Volunteers will be picking up, sorting, and tracking trash/recycling. Volunteers should bring gloves and masks, but extra will be on hand.

Restoration Immigration Legal Aid (RILA)

Make essential care kits for our most vulnerable immigrant neighbors! Volunteers are invited to put together bags of hygiene items for RILA clients who don’t have the resources to buy them for themselves and their families. A list of hygiene items will be given to volunteers who may then choose from the list to build their own bags and volunteers can drop them into a designated box outside Restoration Anglican Church. These kits will be given to families as they come in for client meetings over the next month.

Synetic Theater

Volunteers will be painting in the theater and in the theater lobby. All you need to know how to do is roll paint! We will be abiding by the latest CDC guidelines and recommendations. We will require temperature checks, social distancing, and universal masking.

Send an encouraging message to your neighbors with mental health issues. COVID-19 has impacted most people around the world in many ways, including mentally and emotionally. In fact, one in six Americans sought the help of a professional counselor for the first time in 2020. RPSV supports adults with mental health, substance use, and homelessness issues. RPSV offers both in-person and virtual support groups weekly and actively seeks to share messages of encouragement with those we serve. We invite you to share positive thoughts with RPSV’s participants through a written message, poems, short videos, photos, a graphic (you can create one on free websites like Canva.com), a virtual postcard, or more and place them on our Kudo Board. There’s space for up to 100 messages on the Board that will then be delivered to RPSV’s Centers and placed on our virtual platforms to uplift those we serve.

AHC Inc, an affordable housing developer, has many active senior citizens living in apartment buildings in Arlington. These seniors have been isolated in their apartments during the pandemic. A cheerful note and small potted plant or flowers from you will brighten their apartment and let them know that people in the community are thinking about them. Volunteers will purchase the plant & pot. Decorating the pot would be fun but is optional. Please write a cheerful note to a resident to be delivered with the plant. Some residents speak Spanish so notes written in Spanish would be welcome. Volunteers must be able to deliver the plant & note to one of three Arlington locations on Wednesday, April 21 between 9-2pm. AHC staff are not working in their offices full time yet so we are not able to accept the plants at other times. AHC will confirm with you in advance which location you prefer. We encourage volunteers to give multiple plants and notes so that all 150 of our residents can enjoy a handcrafted potted plant and an encouraging note.

Even with schools opening up again, many of the youth Bridges serves are still looking for fun and unique activities to do at home so they can keep boredom at bay. Volunteers can help by creating, what Bridges calls, Anti-Boredom Bundles! These are hands-on activity kits that include all necessary items for the activity to be completed, instructions, and an optional educational component. Some examples of bundles include soap carving kits, make your own bouncy balls, and rain clouds in a jar. These are just examples; Bridges encourages volunteers to take the bundles and make it their own! Volunteers and volunteer groups would make enough bundles for each individual child to have their own. The number of youth at the shelter changes so often, Bridges will let volunteers know the amount of bundles needed the week before so they have enough time to gather project supplies. The project is done at the location of the volunteer(s) choice, not at any of Bridges’ location. Delivery instructions will be provided.

The Virginia Chamber of Commerce has commenced the development of Blueprint Virginia 2030, its long-term, statewide economic development plan designed to transcend gubernatorial terms and reflect the consensus of Virginia’s business community. Blueprint Virginia 2030 will build on Blueprint Virginia 2025, adopted four years ago.

We're helping to install a temporary traffic garden at Arlington Traditional Elementary School. A traffic garden is a small set of designed "streets," including traffic lanes, crosswalks, stop signs, etc. where children can learn bike skills away from car traffic and faster riders. We're looking for 10-12 volunteers (adults and kids alike!) to help us create the garden using chalk, paint and other materials. We'll provide the design, instruction, and all materials.

Arlington Treasure Hunt: Small Bites Edition 4/30/2021 - 5/3/2021

Back by popular demand! Last October, our first-ever Arlington Treasure Hunt exceeded our expectations, bringing out over 250 participants for a fun, socially distanced ride to visit quirky, little-known spots. Everyone had such a blast that we’re bringing it back this spring... with a delicious twist. For this “small bites edition” of the hunt, you will be taken on a delightful adventure around Arlington to discover some of our true community treasures: locally owned eateries! Whether they’ve been cooking up sizzling pupusas, dunking delicious donuts, or brewing the best coffee in town, these small, but mighty powerhouses have tackled COVID challenges in extraordinary ways, and it’s time to celebrate them.

Using an online event site, you will be guided to each restaurant location to gather clues to win prizes, learn little-known facts about local shops, and taste delicious treats along the way. This ride has been designed to be flexible and social-distance-friendly, so that it can be done alone or with family, over an afternoon or throughout the weekend. It’s all about having fun and celebrating local spots that make Arlington our vibrant hometown!

Note on Routes: You will be able to choose between two distance options (or try both!). The full route (~17 miles)--with starting options at the Crystal City Water Park or Bluemont Park--will loop through National Landing, Shirlington, Ballston, and Clarendon with a couple stops along Columbia Pike. While we've carefully selected our suggested route with safety in mind, the route does include a mix of trails and street riding. The shorter route (5 miles) is in National Landing with a starting location of the Crystal City Water Park. The shorter route was selected with younger and newer riders in mind and is mostly on bike lanes, but there are a few blocks of riding on streets without bike lanes where riders may feel more comfortable on sidewalks. Given the urban nature of National Landing, this is an open streets ride, so children should either be on a parent's bike (tag-along, child seat, family bike) or be riders who can ride in a straight line and confidently start, slow and stop on their own. Riders will receive suggested routes on the event start date through a special website designed for the event by our friends at Game Genius, so stay tuned!
