Arlington County is proposing changes to the enforcement procedure for the Arlington County Noise Control Ordinance. The Chamber asked the County Board to delay a public hearing on the proposal to allow for community discussion before the formal hearing, and the Board voted 4-0 to postpone the hearing until June. On Wednesday, May 6 at 9:00 a.m., Ben Aiken and Katelyn Thomas, the Arlington County Ombudspeople, will join the Chamber’s Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee to discuss the proposed changes, take questions, and hear feedback from the business community.

The Chamber is pleased to announce the 2020 business-themed County Board Candidate Forum. Current County Board Chair Libby Garvey (D) is running for re-election and is being challenged by Audrey Clement (I) in the general election in November. Additional candidates for the general election may yet be announced; the Chamber will invite all candidates who enter the race before the event. This event is for candidates running in the regularly-scheduled election for a full County Board term.

This business-themed candidate forum features a moderated discussion of topics important to the Arlington business community with the candidates running for the Arlington County Board. The event will provide candidates the opportunity to engage with local business leaders and to address the key issues affecting the business community.

This event is open to the business community, as well as the general public. Please note the registration details below.

Join the Arlington Chamber of Commerce for the Nonprofit Forum: Pivoting Strategies on Tuesday, May 19, from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on the Zoom platform, presented by the Chamber’s Community Action Committee. During this time of uncertainty, strategies for both nonprofits and businesses in the community are changing drastically. This forum will utilize breakout sessions to dive deep into the different areas of change. Each room will be moderated by an industry professional, who will facilitate a discussion between both nonprofit and business attendees. The breakout room participants will brainstorm on their topic areas, and the Chamber will compile the list of all notes to distribute to attendees.

Governor Northam has announced that Northern Virginia will not go into “Phase I” of his Forward Virginia reopening plan until at least May 29, lagging behind the rest of the Commonwealth, pending improvement in local health data. The phases of reopening will be a gradual transition, with Phase I still being highly restricted, with some relaxation of retail limits and restaurants and gyms allowed only outdoor service, nothing indoors. Phase I will be followed by Phase II, which reduces restrictions further, and then Phase III will be closer to normal operations, with continued safety provisions. Governor Northam has suggested that each phase will last 2-4 weeks, with progress based on health data, not a set timeline.

On Wednesday, May 20, from 9:00-10:00 a.m., the Chamber Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee will meet as a working session for members to raise questions and concerns they have about the Forward Virginia plan. Members are encouraged to share plans and best practices that can help each other as we work through this period and look ahead.
