Arlington County has commenced its annual budget-setting process. Through April, the County Board will hold work sessions and meet with community members to set the FY 2021 county budget (for July 2020 through June 2021). On Wednesday, March 4 at 9:00 a.m., the Chamber’s Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee will welcome Richard Stephenson, the Arlington County Budget Director, to discuss and answer questions about the budget-setting process.

Given the evolving news regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) including the Governor’s announcement of the declaration of a state of emergency, our Board leadership made the decision to postpone the event from Saturday, March 14 to a future date to be determined.

The Arlington Business Gala, "Arlington's Best Night Out," has been the Chamber's biggest event for more than 90 years. In December, the Chamber sent the County Board a letter encouraging more flexible, simple, and consistent signage rules. Promote your business before the workday even begins. The format of the Breakfast Connection gives attendees a chance to bring their business to the table, literally. This event focuses on roundtable power networking and provides attendees the chance to exchange business cards, develop new prospects and share a 60 second pitch with each table. Arlington, VA (February 18, 2020) The National Chamber Ensemble presents a unique presentation of The Four Seasons of Vivaldi on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gunston Arts Center. NCE will honor the genius and artistry of Antonio Vivaldi with a highly creative and crowd pleasing multi-media spectacular performance of Vivaldi's The Remarkable Four Seasons. Beloved NBC Meteorologist Bob Ryan is the special guest host for the evening sharing the weather broadcast for "The Seasons." Art critic, curator and Italian Culture expert Renato Miracco will present an introduction to Vivaldi's masterpiece.

General admission tickets are $36 for adults and $18 for students, plus applicable service charges. Tickets are available online atwww.nationalchamberensemble.org and at the box office one hour prior to the performance. Group discounts for 10 or more are available by calling (703) 685-7590.

Inspired by landscape paintings by Italian artist Marco Ricci, “The Four Seasons” is one of Antonio Vivaldi’s most famous works. Composed during the Baroque period and published in 1725, each concerto is accompanied by sonnets, written, as most believe, by Vivaldi himself. The sonnets provide a narrative for the music, offering a more complete picture of each season as the composition weaves its way through spring, summer, fall, and winter.

The performance of Vivaldi’s “The Extrordinary Four Seasons” will include a reading of the sonnets by Bob Ryan, as well as a multimedia presentation accompanying the performance that includes photos, moving images, and Vivaldi’s own words that he wrote into the music and the ensemble's own humorous demonstration linking Vivaldi's words with the music. The Ensemble’s Artistic Director Leonid Sushansky, called “a musical storyteller” by The Washington Post, will perform the violin solo with a sextet that includes two violins, viola, cello, double bass, and harpsichord.

Albinoni's famous Adagio which demonstrates the height of the Neo-Baroque movement will open the exciting program.

The National Chamber Ensemble was founded in 2007 to provide opportunities to appreciate and enjoy the art of chamber music, bringing together performers, audiences, and composers. OUR STUDENTS ARE CHANGING SCHOOL LUNCH MENUS

The Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge is the only event in the country that gives students a platform to influence and change what is served in their school cafeterias. Throughout the National Capital Region, dishes created by middle and high school students for this event are being served to thousands of their peers. And our school districts are hearing the message loud and clear. Students want and need to be nourished better, with fresher, healthier, more diverse, and more appealing options so they can perform at their best now and in the years to come.

Every day, school food professionals face an array of federal requirements to put school meals in our cafeterias that meet strict nutritional guidelines while adhering to restrictive per-meal budgets. The Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge gives students the chance to overcome these challenges to tell us what they’d like to see in their school cafeterias. Their success is changing what’s being served in our schools.

21 TEAMS NOW SERVING LUNCH. AND BREAKFAST. AND SNACKS.

This year, 21 teams will participate in the Real Food for Kids Culinary Challenge, representing 6 school districts in the National Capital Region. Student teams have been researching and developing their recipes since the start of the school year. Their draft recipes have been vetted by a team of school nutrition professionals to ensure compliance with federal guidelines and further refined. Now they are getting ready to serve them to you. Each team will share samples of their creations during our public tasting. And you’re going to be amazed at what you taste. Every year, our attendees can't stop talking about how impressed they are with the creativity and the quality of the dishes being served. It's a taste sensation you won't want to miss.

Lunch entries are judged by a panel of celebrity chefs, school food and food industry professionals and, of course, students. The public will select the winning teams in our Breakfast and Lunch Showcase. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams and the winning lunch will be served in area school cafeterias next fall.

The Chamber's monthly Small Business Roundtable offers an important educational opportunity to smaller businesses. The roundtable is free to members but space is limited and registration is requested. The topic of discussion changes monthly, allowing attendees to learn how to enhance their business and increase their success in a different way each month!

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: "Labor Laws 2020: What’s New, What’s Overlooked and Ways to Protect Your Business" presented by R. Doug Taylor, Shareholder, Bean Kinney & Korman P.C.

Your employees are your business’s most important asset. But, are you considering all aspects of their employment within the context of current labor laws applicable to Virginia businesses? In this workshop, you will learn about changes in the rules that have updated the salary threshold for the Fair Labor Standard Act’s (FLSA) exemptions from overtime, how to classify independent contractors in the current gig economy, and how to avoid off-the-clock work, to minimize your risks as an employer. With more labor law changes on the horizon, this session will arm you with critical information to both protect your business and enable your employees to succeed. In light of the recent developments with COVID-19, Doug will also discuss Families First Coronavirus Response Act and new paid FMLA leave and paid sick leave requirements.

Tomorrow, we will have a special opportunity to hear Congressman Don Beyer discuss the business implications of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The Arlington Chamber will be presenting this call along with the Alexandria, Falls Church, Northern Virginia, and Mount Vernon-Lee Chambers of Commerce. The Congressman will discuss the details of the legislation and the Federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and engage in a Q&A session.

The call will be on Friday, March 27, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Participation in this call is free for Arlington Chamber members.
