The Sustainability Committee will be meeting next Friday, August 2 at the Arlington Chamber of Commerce – VIDA Fitness Boardroom at 9:00 a.m. Representatives from Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy (AIRE) will be presenting to the Committee on bringing homeowners and small businesses interested in installing solar and/or electric vehicle chargers together in a group, or co-op. Business owners and homeowners can join the group at no obligation to receive discounted pricing and unbiased, installer-neutral support throughout the process.

The Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee will look at two updates to plans for energy use and sustainability at its meeting on Wednesday, August 7. The Committee welcomes Rich Dooley, Community Energy Coordinator for the Arlington County Department of Environmental Services. We will discuss updates to the Community Energy Plan, which was originally adopted in 2013 and looks at generation, use, and distribution of energy. We will also discuss the Green Building Initiative, which looks at the environmental impacts of construction in Arlington.

The meeting will be at 9:00 a.m. at the Arlington Chamber of Commerce – VIDA Fitness Boardroom. As always, participation in the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee is open to all Chamber members, and is exclusive to Chamber members.

Promote your business before the workday even begins. The format of the Breakfast Connection gives attendees a chance to bring their business to the table, literally. This event focuses on roundtable power networking and provides attendees the chance to exchange business cards, develop new prospects and share a 60 second pitch with each table. Bring plenty of business cards- you'll need them! Registration includes a full buffet breakfast with coffee, tea and juice.

Please join author, speaker, and cold war expert Gary Powers Jr. to talk about the U-2 Incident of May 1, 1960, in which his father was shot down while flying a CIA U-2 spy plane over the former Soviet Union. In 2017, Powers, Jr., published his first book, which includes his dad’s letters to and from family while incarcerated, family photos sent to him in prison, and other correspondence that provides a unique firsthand account of the U-2 Incident, shoot down, imprisonment, and events that led up to his father’s exchange for Soviet Spy Rudolph Abel in 1962. Biography on Francis Gary Powers, Jr.

Born June 5, 1965, in Burbank, California, he is the son of Francis Gary and Claudia “Sue” Powers. Gary holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from California State University, Los Angeles, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration / Certification in Non-profit Management from George Mason University (GMU), Fairfax, Virginia. He will graduate this year with his Master’s Degree in U.S. History from Adams State University, Alamosa, CO.

Gary is the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of The Cold War Museum, a 501(c) (3) charity located at Vint Hill, VA 45 minutes west of Washington, DC. He founded the museum in 1996 to honor Cold War veterans, preserve Cold War history, and educate future generations about this time period. As Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Cold War Theme Study he works with the National Park Service and leading Cold War experts to identify historic Cold War sites for commemorating, interpreting, and preservation. Recently, he consulted for a Steven Spielberg Cold War thriller, Bridge of Spies, about James Donovan who brokered the 1962 spy exchange between KGB spy Rudolph Abel and CIA U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, Sr.

Gary is the author of Letters from a Soviet Prison (2017) and Spy Pilot (2019) which both help to dispel the misinformation surrounding the U-2 Incident. He is a Board Member of the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum near Omaha, NE and an Honorary Board Member of the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC. Because of his efforts to honor Cold War veterans the Junior Chamber of Commerce selected him as one of the “Ten Outstanding Young Americans” for 2002. Gary lectures internationally and appears regularly on C-SPAN, the History, Discovery, and A&E Channels. He is married and has one son.

Bond's Escape Room is proud to announce that on August 27th, we will work with A-SPAN (the Arlington Street People's Assistance Network) and donate all proceeds from ticket sales to fight homelessness in Arlington. In addition to playing escape rooms for a great cause, try out our selection of board games, socialize, and enjoy free catering from Fireworks Pizza (served 3pm-8pm), or consider donating on site. The Chamber's monthly Small Business Roundtable offers an important educational opportunity to smaller businesses. The roundtable is free to members but space is limited and registration is requested. In today’s economic environment, workforce is key. Learn how Registered Apprenticeship can help improve employee retention, and let you create mirror images of your best employees. Traditionally a resource for trade industries including plumbing, electric, HVAC, and cosmetology, Registered Apprenticeship is now also utilized by businesses working in IT, cybersecurity, health, insurance, hospitality, early childhood education, and more. Participation in the Registered Apprenticeship Program is free, and programs can be customized to industry needs. Registered Apprenticeship consultants work with businesses to walk them through every step of the process, from developing their apprenticeship program to signing their first apprentice and beyond.

Caleb Wade is the Lead Generation Specialist for the Registered Apprenticeship division of the Department of Labor & Industry for the state of Virginia. He works to create new opportunities for business growth within communities through utilizing the Registered Apprenticeship model. This event is designed to help you discover if a Registered Apprenticeship Program could be a fit for your workforce needs.
