Join the Chamber’s Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee on Wednesday, June 5 at 9:00 a.m. as we welcome Rick Millman and Erwving Bailey of the Arlington County Department of Real Estate Assessments. This department is responsible for property value assessments that are used for calculating tax bills in Arlington County. Our guests will present on the processes for assessments, and will take members’ questions on the subject. As always, the Government Affairs Committee is open to all Chamber members and exclusive to Chamber members.

Two hour metered parking is available in front of the Chamber office. There is also two hour metered parking in the ground lot at 14th Street & Courthouse Road, across from the Arlington Courthouse. An underground parking lot is available at 14th & Taft Street with rates of $4 (1 hour), $6 (2 hours), and $8 (until closing). The Optimist Club of Arlington Virginia will host its bi-monthly luncheon on Wednesday, 6/5 at 12:15 pm at Washington Golf and Country Club featuring Dr. Irma Becerra, the new President of Marymount University. Dr. Irma Becerra took office as the seventh president of Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, on July 1, 2018 and was inaugurated, March 28, 2019. Guests will enjoy a plated lunch at 12:30 and then, at approximately 1:00 pm, Dr. Becerra will be asked to give a 20 minute talk about her journey to become the 7th President, her role and vision for Marymount University, and opportunities for the community to develop partnerships with Marymount University faculty, students, alumni, and staff. At approximately, 1:20 pm she will ask for any questions from the audience. The purpose of the luncheon is to welcome and feature a speaker, as well as, provide updates to members on programs and upcoming events. The members of the Optimist Club of Arlington dedicate themselves to community service and to making Arlington a better place for all to live. We believe that in giving of ourselves in service, our community becomes a better place. The club’s motto “Friend of Youth” indicates our main focus and “Bringing out the Best in Kids” our goal. We sponsor academic and sports activities designed to give Arlington’s youth a better chance to succeed in today’s world.

On Wednesday, June 19, the Chamber’s Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee will look ahead at planning and housing in Arlington with two presentations from the County’s Department of Community Planning, Housing, and Development. First, we will welcome Bob Duffy, Planning Director, for a conversation on the Planning Division’s 2019-2020 work plan. Second, Arlington County is picking up Phase II of its Housing Conservation District work as part of an umbrella housing initiative called Housing Arlington. We will welcome Richard Tucker and Russell Danao-Schroeder from the Housing Division to discuss these plans.

The meeting will be at 9:00 a.m. in the Chamber Boardroom. As always, participation in the Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee is open to all Chamber members, and is exclusive to Chamber members.
