Event Description:
Compstat and its variants, from Baltimore’s Citistat to the Environmental Protection Agency’s now defunct EPAstat, are shaping reform initiatives across public organizations. In Pragmatist Democracy (2011), Christopher Ansell contends that under certain conditions stat-model initiatives promote publicly-minded problem solving and ultimately a sense of shared purpose. Join guest discussants Robert Shea, Principal, Grant Thornton LLP, and Greg Useem, Chief Performance Officer, City of Alexandria, VA in a discussion of Compstat’s promise and prospects. What accounts for Compstat’s appeal? What factors shape stat-model initiatives in practice? What do stat-model initiatives tell us about broader public sector reforms focused on improving measurement and analysis?
