Event Description: David Lightfoot, director of the Communication, Culture, and Technology Program at Georgetown University, will present "The Complexity of Language: How it is Learned and How it Changes." Lightfoot has held professorial appointments at several universities including McGill University, the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and the University of Maryland, where he established and chaired a Linguistics Department for 12 years. In 2001, he joined Georgetown University as dean of the Graduate School. From 2005 to 2009, he served as assistant director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), heading the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences. In 2009 he returned to Georgetown where he is directing the undergraduate interdisciplinary program in cognitive science and the graduate program in Communication, Culture, and Technology.
