Phoenix Bikes is back again this year with another Raise + Ride: Sizzling Summer Century! Every year our fantastic supporters wow us with their enthusiasm—and competitiveness—as they run their very own fundraising campaigns with the goal of making a positive impact on the lives of local youth.

This year's ride is taking place Saturday, August 3 on the W&OD Trail from our shop on Columbia Pike to Purvellville and back. The route will have plenty of rest stops, cheering, and good company, with a variety of distance options between 9 and 100 miles. The goal is to give you and your team a fun and exciting opportunity to celebrate your love of biking while raising money for a great cause!

Can't make it to our group ride? No problem! Riders can opt to participate virtually by choosing their own distance, route, and time for their ride during the weekend of Aug 3-4.

Virtual Meeting Instructions

The Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee meeting on August 7 will be a closed work session to discuss revisions to the Arlington County Sign ordinance. For this and for all closed work sessions, participation will be limited to only private sector members of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce.

As part of the Commercial Market Resiliency Initiative (CMRI) 2.0, the County is studying potential revisions to the Sign Ordinance to make the process more flexible. We welcome our private sector members to bring their experiences and thoughts on the existing Sign ordinance, and suggestions for improving the process. The Chamber wants to hear from all of you as we establish the Chamber’s policy priorities on signage and revisions to the Sign ordinance. With these priorities, we will work collaboratively with the County and advocate for a Sign ordinance revision that reflects our priorities. This meeting will be 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Zoom.

As part of Arlington-based Diplomatic Language Service's ongoing commitment to giving back and supporting causes important to our team members, we are bringing the inaugural DLS 5k! to Arlington on Saturday, August 24th. Proceeds of this race will benefit the Lewy Body Dementia Association. Lewy Body is a progressive brain disorder many people have never heard of - despite being the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer's.

Race course will be out-and-back and mostly flat along the W&OD Trail. Start/finish line will be on the trail near Madison Manor park. There will be one aid station just before the turnaround point (1.3 miles), and all finishers will receive a t-shirt (t-shirt selection NOT guaranteed after July 24th early registration cut-off). Prizes and medals awarded to the top finishers!

5k will start at 9:10am.

Timing will be done manually with a race clock and bibs (no chips).

Have younger runners who aren't quite ready for a 5k? The Flash Fit Kids' Summer Races will be running alongside the 5k - check out and register for a 2.6 mile run, a 1 mile run, or a 200m dash here.

The Chamber's free monthly Small Business Roundtable is an important educational and networking opportunity for small businesses. This event provides expert speakers on topics to help you grow your business, such as digital marketing and business development, and also gives you the opportunity to make connections and grow your professional network. The forum is applicable to a variety of businesses and employee levels, from front-line customer service to owners.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Talent Seek & Find

David Remick, Executive Director of the Alexandria/Arlington Regional Workforce Council, will provide you with candidate sourcing strategies, as well as options for building the staff you need inside your company. Our meeting will be a safe space to commiserate over these recruitment challenges, share our “horror stories”, and learn about some promising practices.

The Alexandria/Arlington Regional Workforce Council serves as the local Workforce Development Board under the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. They are a proud partner of Virginia Career Works and Go Virginia. The Council provides oversight over WIOA services at the region’s two American Job Centers, the Alexandria Workforce Development Center and the Arlington Employment Center. These services include financial support for college tuition and vocational certifications, subsidies for transportation, books and fees while in school, and uniforms for employment.

Zhenya Parish, current Resident Artist at the MoCA Arlington Innovation Studio + Store, presents, Canvas Vibrations, a live painting performance done together with a concert by violinist, ANDALU. Parish defines her method and practice of painting around the "Art of Letting Go." She says:

I work to capture the energy and expressions of these live painting performance events, Canvas Vibrations. What goes down on canvas right now might not exist soon-after. Themes develop, balances are captured, and washed away. Sometimes fully more often partially. Trying to build up a representation of the evening’s collective consciousness.
