This event offers the opportunity to hear about the recent General Assembly session from the legislators who represent Arlington in Richmond. Arlington’s members of the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates will discuss the legislation that they patroned, the issues that the General Assembly took up, and the outlook for Arlington and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The event features a question and answer portion, and we encourage you to prepare your questions in advance and be ready to ask them.

We are pleased to announce that the Rise of a Region Lecture will be held on April 4, 2024, presented by the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship at the Costello College of Business with the generous support of Virginia Housing.

This lecture will address questions such as:

How did the built environment of Northern Virginia develop into the places we live, work, and entertain in today?
How did residential communities develop, from the early settlement of Arlington through the emergence of postwar communities in Fairfax during the 1940s and 1950s to the establishment of large-scale communities in western Fairfax and the expansive planned unit developments in Loudoun and Prince William?
What lessons from the past can we learn as we work to develop the region's future?

If you are a real estate professional who moved to this area, just started your career, or want to learn more about the economic and development history of Northern Virginia, join us to deepen your understanding of this dynamic market.

Instructor: Andrew Painter
Andrew Painter is a shareholder with Walsh Colucci Lubeley & Walsh PC, a law firm based in Arlington, Virginia, that is known for its land use expertise in Northern Virginia. Painter works in the firm’s Land Use and Zoning practice group, where he focuses on securing zoning entitlements across Northern Virginia, including Fairfax County, Loudoun County, the City of Falls Church, the City of Fairfax, and the Town of Leesburg. A native of Northern Virginia, Painter has spent much time traveling and writing about the region’s land development history and received an award from the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association for his review of enduring rural landscapes in Fairfax County.

Ahoy! It's story time at AWLA.

Join us for story time at AWLA on Saturday, April 13, 2024, to hear local author, Jodie Knox, read her book Hank & Pearl - The Tale of a Captain and Crew. Join us for a conversation with current Innovation Studio Artist in Residence, Chris Combs, and MoCA Arlington Curator of Exhibitions, Blair Murphy about Combs’s new wall-sized installation The Next Big Thing.

The Next Big Thing borrows the form of Katsushika Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa, recreated with industrial components like aluminum DIN rail, colorful Ethernet cables, and LED strips. The artwork addresses the cycle of hype surrounding new products and incorporates the artist’s own Google, Facebook, and Twitter data profiles, as well as responding to the faces and presence of viewers.

Interact with the completed work in person and hear more about its inspiration, concepts, and construction in our artist’s talk beginning at 6:15pm. Free.

In conjunction with the exhibition Liz Ensz: NO GRIDS NO MASTERS, artist Liz Ensz has invited artists to participate in a series of performances in response to their exhibition. This evening will include a new performance by artist Isa Leal and a participatory screening of a video work by artists Skye Fort and Liz Ensz.

Isa Leal’s participatory performance asks, Can we practice pre-colonized ways of knowing while we remain surrounded by the detritus of the trauma of late stage capitalism? In Systems from our flesh, our emotional memory to oceans. What are we feeling with?

Liz Ensz + Skye Fort will be screening You Are Made of Stardust and Microplastics: Meditation for Extinction, a 25-minute embodied meditation which activates objects from the exhibition, NO GRIDS NO MASTERS: A Post-Cartesian Experiment. Using a speculative fossil molded from recycled #2 plastic (HDPE) and a guiding video, this experiential work explores the transformation of matter, deep time, and the acceptance of our own extinction.

Arlington County will vote for two new members of the School Board this November. The Chamber’s Education and Workforce Development Committee has extended invitations to all candidates running for two open seats to speak with the Committee and take questions.The meeting will be via Zoom on Tuesday, April 23 from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.

Four candidates have accepted our invitation: Kathleen Clark, Larry Fishtahler, Chen Ling, and Zuraya Tapia-Hadley. All four are seeking the Democratic endorsement, which will be selected via a caucus from May 5 to May 11.

Please enter into the building at 3003 Washington Blvd, for Registration Check-In. Smokecraft staff will then guide you up the elevator to the rooftop space.

Parking is available in the building with the garage entry being on the 11th Street sides. Guests parking in the garage should enter the "3003 Washington" elevator lobby and come to L to check in. There is ample street parking located around the building as well, and the Clarendon metro stop is only 1.5 blocks away.

Join artists Zaq Landsberg and Nekisha Durrett for a conversation about the rewards and challenges of public art and the complex nature of monuments and memorials. Their experiences working in Arlington will provide a foundation for the conversation. Zaq Landsberg’s popular Reclining Liberty is on view at MoCA Arlington through July of 2024 and Nekisha Durrett’s acclaimed Queen City was unveiled in Metropolitan Park in 2023.

The conversation is co-sponsored by MoCA Arlington and Arlington Public Art, a program of Arlington Cultural Affairs, a division of Arlington Economic Development (AED).
