STEMtastic Adventures!, the mEducation Alliance's 14th Annual Symposium

The mEducation Alliance (mEA) is a non-profit organization HQ'd in Arlington, VA and focused on the appropriate and sustainable uses of edtech in developing countries. Among other activities, it is the largest convening platform of development, donor agencies and other organizations focused on this topic and geographic regions. For example, the US Dept of State, USAID, Peace Corps, Amazon, GIZ (German gov't) and FCDO (British gov't are all members.

This event is the mEA's 14th annual Symposium bringing together policymakers, practitioners, funders, and researchers from around the world. This year's event theme is STEMtastic Adventures!. As with last year's event (similarly themed, also held at GMU's Mason Square campus, which included representatives from 40 countries, and 100+ presentations), we are planning for presenters and attendees from around the world interested in sharing good practices and networking with others to accelerate STEM education opportunities in low-resource settings. We anticipate between 250-300 attendees.

Our confirmed keynoters so far include: US Dept of State Science Advisor to the Secretary to State, Amazon Web Services Social Impact Advisor for Africa and the Middle East, and the head of Ghana's Education Service.

The Government Affairs & Economic Development Committee will hold its annual conversation with Arlington’s General Assembly delegation on Wednesday, October 2. All five members of the General Assembly representing Arlington have been confirmed to attend: Senators Adam Ebbin and Barbara Favola, and Delegates Patrick Hope, Alfonso Lopez, and Adele McClure. The legislators will speak briefly on their priorities for the 2025 General Assembly session and take member questions. . This meeting will be 9:00-10:15 a.m. on Zoom.

Kids CARE Club (Creating a Responsible Environment) is a program series for animal lovers ages 5-9 and their families to learn how to keep pets and wildlife safe through hands-on activities and crafts. On Wednesday, October 30, from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., our 2024 Racial Equity Summit will convene thought leaders from around Virginia to discuss how we can ensure everyone has an opportunity to be healthy. Experts with backgrounds in policy, community programs, and the maternal health crisis will share how they work toward equity in Virginia every day. Presenters will address the state of Virginia's health, social drivers of health, best practices in wellness, and how they impact the future.

The Chamber's free monthly Small Business Roundtable is an important educational and networking opportunity for small businesses. This event provides expert speakers on topics to help you grow your business, such as digital marketing and business development, and also gives you the opportunity to make connections and grow your professional network. The forum is applicable to a variety of businesses and employee levels, from front-line customer service to owners.

Join Chief Clinical Officer Pattie Schneeman from National Capital Treatment and Recovery as she addresses substance abuse in the workplace. The fact is that overdose rates (fatal and nonfatal) have increased 52% since 2019. It’s overwhelming and it affects not only the individual but families, co-workers, friends, and neighbors. And specifically, the physical, emotional, social, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person’s life. Pattie will educate and empower employees and employers with the questions and answers that help navigate this topic at their place of business. She will address topics relatable to all levels of employment. Whether you're a business owner, manager or staff, the topic is relevant. This will be a safe space to have a conversation that impacts so many.
