Event Description:
Join the Arlington Historical Society and Marymount University’s School of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History and Politics on Thursday, September 14, 2017 for a panel discussion on “Another Side of Desegregation in Arlington, VA” A panel of Arlingtonians will discuss their perspectives on Arlington’s efforts to desegregate since the 1950s. Arlington took a big step to desegregate its schools by allowing the first four students to attend a white junior high school in 1959 but much was left to be done. How did it feel for black students to not be allowed to participate in extracurricular school activities? How did Arlington handle busing in the 1970s? What was the impact on the community and students? Panel participants will include students, parents, and school administrators from the African-American community who were involved in and impacted by the ongoing transition from segregation to the court-mandated integration of Arlington public schools. Join us for a unique discussion on Arlington’s road to desegregation. The program will begin at 7:00 pm at Marymount University in the Reinsch Library auditorium (2807 N. Glebe Rd, Arlington, VA 22207). The program is free and open to the public. For additional AHS information, please contact 703- 892-4204or visit www.arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org.
