Event Description:
The U.S. Department of Defense has called climate change “an urgent and growing threat to our national security, contributing to increased natural disaster, refugee flows, and conflicts over basic resources such as food and water.” For this performance, individuals were interviewed and stories of flight, migration, climate and barriers have been recorded. Whether an environmental scientist, bird watcher, fisherman, outdoor hobbyist or National Zoo employee, these short statements demonstrate a very personal connection to the changing environment. Images emerge of the grandeur of Death Valley, the severity of the Mojave Desert, the species of the Audubon Rockies, simplicity of vernal pools, or the sophistication of fish ladders. For the performance, these voices from the community share experiences of nature or climate. Layered with music and made visual through movement and art, the performance brings forward very personal relationships to the creatures on earth, adaptations and changes. Audiences will participate in aspects of defining the performance space as guide ropes mark off boundaries, creating limitations. Dawn Whitmore adds brief video statements drawn from words and phrases provided by individuals who have told their stories. On Opening Night, Friday March 31 @ 7:30 pm and Closing Night, April 8 @ 7:30 pm, the audience treks to the nearby New District Brewing Company to conclude the performance in a new setting
