Event Description:
The Arlington Historical Society (AHS) will host Dr. Alfred Taylor, who will speak about his book, “Bridge Builders of Nauck/Green Valley” at its next public program on Thursday, February 11. This is the first book about Nauck – Arlington County’s oldest African American community, which dates back to 1844. Located just north of Shirlington, Nauck is rich in history and abundant with bridge builders, both past and present, who have made local and national contributions while fighting for their right to experience a good quality of life. Dr. Taylor will discuss the efforts of those who helped build the community from one that had its growth stymied by laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, to one that is fast becoming, one of Arlington’s most diverse neighborhoods and must be passed on to its youth and new residents. He will feature ordinary Nauck/Green Valley residents who survived segregation, Jim Crow laws and lacked the financial backing to become economically independent, but were able to educate themselves and their children, fight for freedom, make national contributions and remember from whence they came. Dr. Taylor was born in Nauck in 1934. He retired from the University of the District of Columbia in 1999 after 31 years of service, including as Acting Dean. He serves as the chair of the Commission for the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center, is a member of the Board of Directors for OAR, NRO and Bonder and Amanda Johnson CDC, is a member of the Chief of Arlington County Police Advisory Committee and chairs Macedonia Baptist Church Deacon’s ministry. His biggest personal joy is seeing the Nauck community as a viable link to the history, growth and success of Arlington County.
