Event Description:
The Arlington Historical Society (AHS) will host David Lassman, who will present “The Procession has Arrived at the Gates: The Significance of Arlington Memorial Bridge & Memorial Avenue” at its next public program on Thursday, June 11. When President John F. Kennedy’s funeral cortege crossed Arlington Memorial Bridge and travelled down Memorial Avenue on November 25, 1963, it was fulfilling the purpose for which they were built. Contrary to popular belief, the bridge is not merely a means of crossing the Potomac River – and the avenue is more than just the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. They were built to commemorate and honor the nation’s heroes, most significantly starting with George Washington. These are sites worthy of notice and respect. As a teen, David Lassman told his academic advisor that he was going to either be a children’s bookseller or a park ranger. The advisor filled out a form that noted David was “undecided.” Nevertheless David followed both career choices with great enthusiasm. He was the manager of Arlington County’s Imagination Station Children Bookstore and part of the administrative staff of Olsson’s Books & Music for many years. He has been with National Park Service for even longer. Lassman serves as the site manager of Thomas Stone National Historic Site in Charles County, Maryland. About AHS: The Arlington Historical Society, founded in 1956, is a non-profit organization under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The AHS mission is to help Arlingtonians better understand our community through its history. For more information, please visit www.arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org.
