Event Description:
The Arlington Historical Society (AHS) is pleased to announce that Dr. Charlene Drew Jarvis, a distinguished legislator and educator, will be the featured speaker at the AHS annual banquet on Friday, June 5, 2015. A graduate of Oberlin College and Howard University, with a Ph.D. in Neuropsychology from the University of Maryland, Dr. Jarvis was a member of the D.C. City Council for 21 years and president of Southeastern University for 13 years. Dr. Jarvis is the daughter of Dr. Charles Drew, an Arlington resident and groundbreaking African-American physician whose research into blood plasma and blood storage saved thousands of Allied lives in the Second World War. Although not an Arlington resident, Dr. Jarvis came to the family homestead many times from childhood on, including family weddings. AHS will present two annual awards at the banquet: the Cornelia B. Rose Award, and the Volunteer of the Year Award. The Cornelia B. Rose Award is given to a group or individual that has made a significant contribution to the advancement and preservation of Arlington County history. Mrs. Rose was a charter member of the society who research and wrote extensively on Arlington’s history. The 2015 award winner is local historian and raconteur Charlie Clark, whose column, “Our Man in Arlington” appears weekly in the Falls Church News-Press, and whose recent book compiling 106 of those columns about Arlington life and history have added a great deal to understanding of our community. The second award will be the Volunteer of the Year Award, given annually to a volunteer that has made an outstanding contribution to the work of the society in the past year. This year the award will be given to the Friends of Hume School, a group of volunteers in the surrounding neighborhoods who maintain the school grounds and conduct twice-yearly, major cleanup, weeding, and mulching, including a strip of garden along the access road crossing Interstate 395 near the school. Chick Walter, the originator and principal coordinator of the cleanups, will receive the award on behalf of the group. The banquet will provide an opportunity for local businesses and other organizations to sponsor tables and otherwise demonstrate a commitment to the AHS mission of “helping Arlingtonians better understand our community through its history.” Featured will be “legacy businesses” that have long been active in the county. The banquet cost for members is $45.00 and $60.00 for non-members. Businesses can sponsor a table for $360. Reservations may be made on the AHS website at www.arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org. The AHS banquet will provide an excellent opportunity for friends of Arlington history to gather together for a convivial evening.
Directions:
The banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn at Key Bridge and will commence at 6:30 PM with a cash bar, followed by a served meal in the ballroom. The Holiday Inn Rosslyn is located at 1900 N. Fort Myer Drive in Arlington, Virginia. There is free parking in the hotel garage. It is less than two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro station on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines.
