Event Description:
The Arlington Historical Society (AHS) will host David Lassman, who will present “The Road to Happiness: The Origins of the George Washington Memorial Parkway” at its next public program on Thursday, March 12. It was the Roaring Twenties. There were the roars to be heard in Jazz music, in the voices on the telephone, and in the audiences at the cinema. Most importantly there was the roar of the automobile. In an era of social and cultural dynamism, the George Washington Memorial Parkway was built to not only to honor the first president’s 200th birthday, but also to show that transportation could be as innovative and exciting as a flapper’s hairstyle. For those curious about the title of the lecture, watch the silent film called, “Road to Happiness,” at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/interstate/videogallery.htm. As a teen, David Lassman told his academic advisor that he was going to either be a children’s bookseller or a park ranger. The advisor filled out a form that noted David was “undecided.” Nevertheless David followed both career choices with great enthusiasm. He was the manager of Arlington County’s Imagination Station Children Bookstore and part of the administrative staff of Olsson’s Books & Music for many years. He has been with National Park Service for even longer. As of March 2015, Lassman is serving as the site manager of Thomas Stone National Historic Site in Charles County, Maryland.
Directions:
The hour-long program will begin at 7:00pm at Marymount University (2807 N. Glebe Rd, Arlington, VA 22207; the talk will be held on the main floor of the university’s library, Rowley G127). Note that this is a seasonal change-of-venue from Arlington Central Library; AHS programming will return to the library in May 2015. The program is free and open to the public. For additional AHS information, please contact 703-942-9247. For those who take public transit: A free shuttle bus provided by Marymount University is available from the Ballston-MU Metro Station (Orange and Silver lines). The University is also accessible via Metro bus routes 23A and 23T; exit at the N. Glebe Road and Old Dominion Drive stop. For those who drive: Marymount University will provide free parking. Attendees should enter the main entrance gate (located at N. Glebe Road and Old Dominion Drive); the Security Station at the main entrance should direct them where to park. Campus Safety is located at Ireton Hall.
