Event Description:
The Arlington Historical Society (AHS) will host Cathy Bonneville Hix, Social Studies Supervisor, who will present “Bringing History Alive: Teaching Social Studies in Arlington Public Schools” at its next public program on Thursday, December 11. Arlington Public School students have the opportunity to learn history through engaging with it. Throughout their kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) schooling, students have multiple opportunities to experience, research, explore, question, write about, and debate during their study of local, national and world history. This presentation provides an overview of the Arlington K-12 social studies curriculum as well as the strategies used to engage students in their study of history. Specific examples of how APS students incorporate local history will also be highlighted. Cathy Hix is a third generation Arlingtonian who has taught at the same school that both she and her father attended as teenagers. She received her undergraduate degree from Western Kentucky University and spent twelve years teaching special education. Hix teaches at a diverse school and enjoys the opportunity to teach students from a variety of different backgrounds. She believes teachers should take a creative stance with their students and, she loves creating activities that engage with students. The hour-long program will begin at 7:00pm at Arlington Central Library Auditorium (1015 N. Quincy Street). A question-and-answer session will follow. The program is free and open to the public. For additional Central Library information, please contact 703-228-5990.
